Chocolate-covered Date Hearts

I get the best ideas at night lately. Either before falling asleep or right after I wake up but are not entirely awake yet. It’s before my mind starts rumbling and going through the to do list for the day. Is it weird that I’m thinking about chocolate in the morning? Probably not, once you know how delicious these chocolate-covered date hearts are!

Either way, it was during one of these creative spikes that I got the idea for this healthy Valentine’s Day dessert. Ok, that’s not exactly the truth. I actually first got the idea while scrolling through Pinterest and coming across this recipe for Chocolate-covered Almond Butter stuffed Dates.

As you may know by now, I have a serious sweet tooth or better, chocolate tooth. Since my stomach doesn’t do well with processed sugar, I’m always looking for healthier alternatives that still taste like the real deal to get my chocolate fix.

I made this recipe a couple of times before it came to my mind to form the dates into little hearts. Et voilá, the Valentine’s Day chocolate-covered hearts were born.

At first, I bought real chocolate glaze but then I found some leftover dark chocolate chip chungs in my pantry from Christmas baking. Although I’ve never used them as glaze before, I read somewhere that you could. So, I tried it.

It worked out perfectly and all in all the heart dates were done in about 30 minutes. I let them cool on a roast before putting them in the fridge to harden. When I tried one the next day, I seriously thought I was in (chocolate) heaven. So good!

It’s a great sweet snack that you can have after dinner without feeling stuffed or gross. Today, I even had 6 (!) pieces after lunch. Maybe a little bit too much. I felt quite worn out and I think my body just needed the sugar spike :D.
